Captain Marvel
It has been forever and a day since I have written a review. I think it is only right that I start back up with the latest MCU movie, "Captain Marvel". Now, I know there have been several youtube videos claiming the opposite of my decision, BUT I have something a *little bit* more entertaining planned for that, so just stay tuned. Without further ado, lets discuss Captain Marvel. This is a spoiler free review. Be on the lookout for a spoiler talk soon.
Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel arrived in theaters March 8th and is the newest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Instead of her making her debut in Avengers: Endgame, I like that she is given an origin story. A really good one at that. We learn how she became this all powerful being, her rough beginnings and obstacles she encountered, the people who helped her along the way, as well as showing us the truth in the Kree and Skrull species. Much like we have seen before with "Captain America: The First Avenger", we are given a period piece set in the past (in this case, the 90's) rather than in modern time. Because of this we are shown a young Nick Fury, Phil Coulson, and even Ronan the Accuser (from Guardians of the Galaxy). It was interesting seeing some characters we've seen in the beginning of their career.
The movie opens with Carol Danvers being known as"Vers" on the planet Hala which is the capital of the Kree civilization. In the past, Marvel origin stories have been held on other planets such as Thor and GOTG, but this one is different and fresh. There are some similarities but it takes an interesting twist. Through certain events (no spoilers) she ends up on Earth. The question and root of the movie now becomes how is she, a "non-Earthling" going to survive and adapt to this new environment?
She eventually meets a two eyed Nick Fury and Phil Coulson working for S.H.I.E.L.D. And to say the least... they didn't become bestie-bestie overnight. But as you continue to watch, it's clear that Nick and "Vers" are similar and eventually team up to stop the Skrull from "infiltrating" Earth.
Throughout the movie, "Vers" has flashbacks of who she really is, a pilot in the air force, how she gets her powers, and the truth regarding the people she trusted the most. She is reunited with old friends and hit with groundbreaking information, making you --- welll..you'll just have to watch the movie for the twist.
Overall, I though it was a great movie. A solid origin story about someone being constantly told no but never backing down. Carol Danvers is a great addition to the MCU, no matter what the -- haters-- say. I've seen and heard some ridiculous complaints about the movie with no concrete reasoning. I am planning to make a video regarding the frequently asked questions regarding how Carol and the stories fit into the MCU. *fingers crossed* Be on the lookout for that.
