Step Sisters: Is it worth the watch?

Before I begin, I would like to address the numerous comments that have been made about the Netflix movie "Step Sisters". After watching the movie, I saw that several people were not fans of the film, calling it a "FLOP" ; "..full of stereotypes",  and my personal favorite "... they [Netflix] did a horrible job of capturing the true meaning of where stepping came from and the culture of black sororities... blah blah blah blah." Lena Waithe, the producer of the film, said herself that it is not just a film "about white girls taking something from the black community".But of course, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but personally, I found the movie notably funny, entertaining, romantic, and ultimately a good movie.  Since it came out on January 19, I have probably watched it 6 or 7 times.... give or take.

Let's get into the idea and story of the film, shall we?.

Jamilah is a young woman, part of a African American sorority of campus, Theta Chi Phi, who has a dream of attending Harvard Law School, but due to an unfortunate circumstance, her chances of attending is jeopardized. The Dean of her University asks her if she would help the Sigma Beta Beta's, a white sorority, "rehabilitate their image" due to an untasteful video that went viral. This tasks that he asks her to take on is to teach these girls how to step and win the Steptacular in order to raise money for a charity.

Throughout the movie, Jamilah is faced with multiple battles from helping the SBB's learn how to step all while not disappointing her sorors for "selling out her culture". She undergoes relationship dilemmas along with a family issue between her and her parents. She comes in contact with various people who help her along her way, to truly find out what it is that she wants and embrace who she really is.

Aside from the serious issues that the movie addresses, like comments black people make about white people, and the idea of having to "prove your blackness", the movie is undeniably funny.  There are multiple scenes that make you want to go back and relive the scene! There are even a couple quotes, I find myself saying or thinking about throughout the day.

Overall, I found the movie extremely funny, heartwarming, and definitely worth the watch!  If you have already seen the movie, let me know what was your favorite part! Or if you do not like the movie, let me know why as well! Catch you all next time, when you chill with me!
