"Alone Together" review
"Alone Together" is the second new show airing on Freeform. The story revolves around two friends, Esther and Benji, who are in a platonic relationship but constantly face the challenge to be accepted by the social and cultural status of Los Angeles. Based on the picture below you can tell that these two are not your average tv "hotties". Let's get right into it!
Esther is an average girl, living in the world of LA surrounded by girls who are deemed as "hot" by popular opinion. She wants to be accepted as one who fits into this faction of women, who watch every thing they eat and are always on top with the latest fashions. She, like many girls, dreams of the life where she is seen as "skinny and pretty", sexually liberated, and overall acknowledged for her efforts in being a "Hot Girl".
Benji is the youngest sibling out of three and can be easily described as the "ugly duckling" or oddball" in his family. Living with his very attractive older brother, and his sister who is the owner of a fashion company (which I perceived to be like Victoria Secret and Forever 21 combined ). He's like the average boy next door who loves watching Daria and does not tend follow the typical standard of what a guy his age should be doing.
What I really like about the show, is the relationship between the two friends. Many people around them believe that they are dating, and when asked, Esther once replied, "Just because we are both small and undesirable, doesn't mean we should date." I find it funny that Benji and Esther can talk about each other's appearances and then agree that they are, in a way, losers. They often do certain actions and moves that a couple may do, but for them, there is always a reason as to why they are doing it. For example, sitting in the same booth at restaurants would be seen as a boyfriend-girlfriend type gesture. Not for these two. Apparently, it is just easier to share food this way.
Defying the norms of what is socially established and just being themselves is something that is interesting in realistic. Contrary to popular Twitter belief, it is possible for a guy and girl to be friends without "catching feelings" or "falling for them". This show captures it, and I can actually say is realistic. I am definitely looking forward to seeing the friendship of Esther and Benji, plus the insults they throw back and forth. It's going to be an interesting ride with these two!
What did you like about the show? Do you relate to Esther or Benji? DO you have any friends who are your Benji/Esther? Let me know how you felt about the show or if you now plan on watching! Hope to see you next time when you chill with me!
The ending was hilarious... just saying
